WARDOGS Steam Launch Options: -dx11, -windowed, and Safe Tests (EA)

TL;DR: This page is a one-change-at-a-time Steam launch-options lab for WARDOGS Early Access — not a dump of “10 verified miracle flags.” Community troubleshooting posts (2UpSkill, PixelNitro, Gaming With DaOpa) cite -windowed, -dx11, and sometimes Unreal-style -ResX / -ResY or -DisableInitialFrontEndFlow. Every row below is marked / may no-op until you retest on your build. Do not paste a kitchen-sink string of ten flags. Store anti-cheat is Elytra (not EAC as current) — launch options do not replace Elytra repair. Black screen → Black Screen. Crash / won’t launch → Crashing. Hitching after launch → Stuttering / FPS.

Lab rules (read before pasting anything)

Rule Why
One change at a time Otherwise you cannot tell which flag helped or hurt
Record GPU + driver + result per step “It worked” without notes is useless next patch
Prefer empty field after you reach a stable menu Launch options are tests, not permanent FPS cheats
Never invent undocumented UE “miracle” flags as verified No unofficial “fixed” stamps / FPS% / studio mandates
Elytra first for WD-LO14 / won’t-launch AC class Options ≠ anti-cheat repair — see Crashing / WD-L014
Remove a flag that does nothing or worsens crash rate May no-op on this EA build

How to open the Launch Options box

  1. Steam Library → right-click WARDOGSProperties.
  2. General tab → Launch Options field at the bottom.
  3. Paste one test string (examples below).
  4. Close the dialog → launch once → record result.
  5. Clear or replace before the next test.
Steam Library
  → WARDOGS → Properties
    → General → Launch Options
→ ONE flag or ONE short combo
→ Launch once → note result
          → Clear if no-op / worse

Symptom → should you even use launch options?

You see First home Launch options?

WD-L014 / WD-LO14 / Unable to launch WD-L014 → Elytra repair Only after verify + Elytra path
Black screen / music but black / stuck startup Black Screen Yes — -windowed test is a common community lead
Crash / access violation / never starts Crashing Maybe — after overlays + verify + Elytra identify
Launches, then hitch / low FPS Stuttering / FPS Usually settings first; flags are secondary experiments

Community-cited options table (may no-op)

Important: Rows are community-cited, not Bulkhead-certified. Treat each as a lab candidate. Do not dump all of them into Launch Options at once.

Option / string Community use-case (dated lead) Status Source class
Empty field (clear all) Control test after a successful menu Preferred steady state once stable Lab hygiene

Explicitly not published as verified here

Temptation Our stance
Long strings of 8–12 undocumented UE console flags Forbidden as “verified” — inventing miracle flags is out of scope
Claiming FPS% gains from any flag Forbidden — no invented FPS%
“Official Bulkhead launch options list” None found as of 2026-09-16 editorial pass
Using launch options instead of Elytra Repair for WD-L014 Wrong tool — see WD-L014

Safe one-change lab (print this)

Stop when you reach a stable main menu. Re-enable fullscreen / clear flags only after you can open Settings.

# Change Exact Launch Options field Pass criteria Next if fail
0 Baseline (empty) Note current failure mode
1 Windowed only -windowed Menu visible / process stable Clear → step 2
2 DX11 only -dx11 Same Clear → step 3
3 Short combo -windowed -dx11 Same Clear → step 4
4 Optional resolution -windowed -ResX=1920 -ResY=1080 (adjust) Window appears at expected size Clear → step 5
5 Optional front-end experiment -windowed -DisableInitialFrontEndFlow Menu / frontend progresses Clear — do not stack further undocumented flags
6 Rollback (empty) again Confirm whether in-game setting can replace the flag Document

Display / black-screen fork (why -windowed is first)

Community black-screen writeups distinguish music-but-black (display init) from hard exit. Launch options sit in the display-init branch — they are not a substitute for overlay/GPU surgery on hard crashes.

Observation Lean First tests
Process alive; audio/menu music; black frame Display / fullscreen init -windowed alone → then resolution string
Process dies immediately; crash dialog Client / overlay / Elytra Crashing ladder — options later
Stuck forever on logo / shader-like stall Shader / first-run compile lead Patience + Settings/stutter notes; optional windowed
Auth text, no dump Service path Is down? / Servers — no flags

Deep black-screen ladder (overlays, HAGS leads, shader notes) lives on Black Screen. Keep this page about how to run the flag lab safely.

API fork (-dx11) — cautious

Claim Status
WARDOGS “requires” DX11 forever Not claimed
-dx11 improves FPS by N% Forbidden — no invented FPS%
-dx12 is safer / faster Unverified — test alone only if you have a reason
Studio published an API mandate in launch options None found

If -dx11 gets you to the menu, open in-game graphics settings, configure normally, then try clearing the flag on a later session.

What launch options will not fix

Problem Why flags won’t save you Go instead
Widespread outage / wave queue Service-side Is WARDOGS down? · Servers
JOIN TIMEDOUT 1628505091 Handshake / capacity 1628505091
Failed to authenticate 1147405308 Auth spillover Servers / error spoke
WD-L014 / Elytra init failure AC components / helper repair WD-L014 · Crashing
Mid-match hitch only Settings / GPU load Stuttering / FPS
Ban-style Access Denied (Cheating + Permanent) Account action Error Codes

Do / Don’t

Do Don’t
Test one flag (or one short combo) at a time Paste ten undocumented UE flags as “the fix”
Clear no-ops Leave a graveyard of dead flags forever
Pair black-screen tests with overlay-off runs Assume flags replace Discord/Steam overlay isolation
Stamp driver + build on every retest Claim “FIXED for everyone”
Prefer Elytra repair for Unable-to-launch codes Lead with EAC folder deletes (store is Elytra)
Link stutter victims to Settings / stutter spoke Invent FPS% from a launch flag

Boundary cases

Edge Action
-windowed works; fullscreen crashes Stay windowed until in-game borderless/fullscreen retested; document
Flag ignored after edit Full Steam Exit; confirm field spelling/spaces; relaunch
Combo works; singles don’t Rare — still record; prefer shortest string that works
Any flag + WD-L014 still present Stop flag spam → Elytra Repair path
Guide says “repair EAC” then add -dx11 Ignore EAC-as-current; Elytra-first

Spacing, Steam Exit, and “flag ignored” hygiene

Mistake Fix
No spaces between flags Use spaces: -windowed -dx11 not -windowed-dx11
Smart quotes / pasted rich text Retype in plain Launch Options box
Edited options while game still running Fully close WARDOGS; Steam → Exit; relaunch Steam
Ten flags from a random UE list Delete; return to one-change lab
Keeping a no-op flag “just in case” Clear empties — noise hides the next test
Using flags during an auth outage Wrong tool — Is down?

After you reach the menu

  1. Open in-game display / graphics settings.
  2. Set window mode / resolution intentionally.
  3. On a later session, clear Launch Options and retest.
  4. If fullscreen crashes return, document and keep the shortest working string.
  5. If hitching remains with a stable process, leave flags alone → Stuttering / FPS.

Overlay + flag interaction

Launch options do not replace overlay isolation. If Discord overlay crashes the client, -windowed may still fail until overlays are off.

Order Why
Overlays off (one at a time) Highest-yield generic local branch on Crash spoke
Then -windowed Display init test with fewer hooks
Then -dx11 API experiment
Then Elytra Repair if Unable to launch AC path owns WD-L014

Cross-link: full overlay matrix → Crashing.

Unreal-style flags: what we will and will not say

WARDOGS is widely described as Unreal Engine-based in community tooling (windowed guides cite UE command-line habits). That does not mean every UE flag is supported, documented, or safe on this EA build.

We can say We will not say
Community cites specific strings below as tests “Official UE flag list for WARDOGS”
Flags may no-op silently “This flag is verified to raise FPS 40%”
One-change lab is required “Paste this 12-flag string”
Clear after success when possible “Keep miracle flags forever”

FAQ

Q: What Steam launch options does WARDOGS officially recommend?
A: As of the 2026-09-16 editorial pass, no public Bulkhead “official launch options list” was found for EA. Community cites -windowed and -dx11 as tests. Everything here is.

Q: Should I put -windowed -dx11 in by default?
A: No. Test -windowed alone, then -dx11 alone, then a short combo only if needed. Default steady state is an empty field once the menu is stable.

Q: Can launch options fix stuttering / low FPS?
A: Unproven. Prefer Stuttering / FPS and Best Settings. Do not invent FPS%.

Q: Will -dx11 fix WD-L014?
A: Unlikely as a first tool. WD-L014 / Unable to launch is treated as launcher/Elytra init class in community posts — verify files + Elytra Repair first → WD-L014.

Q: Is -DisableInitialFrontEndFlow safe / verified?
A: Community-mentioned for front-end startup experiments — / may no-op. Not a studio mandate. Test alone after simpler flags.

Q: Can I use -ResX / -ResY?
A: Gaming With DaOpa frames them as common Unreal Engine windowed sizing flags. They may no-op on a given build — adjust numbers to your display; still.

Q: Why won’t you list 10 “best” flags?
A: Because stacking unverified flags hides causality and invents false confidence. This page is a lab, not a myth dump.

Q: Do launch options replace Elytra?
A: No. Store tag (2026-09-13 editorial): Uses Kernel Level Anti-Cheat Elytra. Repair path stays on Crash / WD-L014 spokes.

Q: Black screen but I hear music — first flag?
A: Community lean: try -windowed alone, then continue on Black Screen.

Q: Where do auth / “servers down” failures go?
A: Not here — Is WARDOGS down? and Servers.
